International law firm Burlingtons negotiates a musical spectacular of "Gone with the Wind" in China

Burlingtons' Head of Media and Entertainment, Brian Eagles, has advised Dreamers Licensing PTE Ltd, the Singaporean rights owner of the French composer Gerard Presgurvic's Gone With The Wind musical, in the licensing arrangements for the show to be staged in mainland China. The musical is based on Margaret Mitchell's classic novel.

The licensing position was complex, requiring the negotiation of a licence from the Mitchell Estate which is very protective of the integrity of the novel and concerned about a Mandarin language adaptation of the play as well as obvious casting issues. A four year licence with the Chinese promoter for both an English and Mandarin version of the show was also difficult to negotiate as was an additional licence dealing with the rights of the original French production in relation to the stage sets, lighting and costumes.

The musical spectacular which is expected to open in Beijing towards the end of 2017 follows the original story line very closely and has been a huge success when performed around the world.

Brian Eagles at Burlingtons said: "The novel Gone with the Wind is still in copyright and owned by the Mitchell estate, but the rights to the Gerard Presgurvic music, lyrics play and production are owned by our clients who hope the show will be as successful in China as it has been in South Korea where it is about to enter its third season".
